Speaker variability in the production of coarticulated tones

چکیده

Previous studies on lexical tone as a speakerdiscriminant feature focused mainly on tone production in isolation or with a fixed tonal context. The present study reports an experiment on the production of Cantonese and Mandarin tones in different tonal contexts and speaking rates. Results show that while speakers show considerable variation in tone production in both languages, speaking rate and tonal context also play a role in the speaker-discriminating power of tone.

The Production of Mandarin Coarticulated Tones by Inexperienced and Experienced English Speakers of Mandarin

This study tested the effects of language learning experience, tonal environment, tonal context and syllable position on American English speakers’ ability to produce Mandarin Chinese coarticulated tones in disyllabic words. Two groups of learners with different amount of classroom learning experience participated in the study. The results obtained indicated that (a) American learners with more...

A model of Mandarin tone categories--a study of perception and production

The current study lays the groundwork for a model of Mandarin tones based on both native speakers’ and non-native speakers’ perception and production. It demonstrates that there is variability in non-native speakers’ tone productions and that there are differences in the perceptual boundaries in native speakers and non-native speakers. There are four experiments in this study. Experiment 1 util...

Production and perception of coarticulated tones.

In the present study, the distinctive tones of Mandarin were found to coarticulate with adjacent tones in running speech. However, the amount of deviation of a tone from its canonical form due to coarticulation varied depending on the nature of the tonal context. In a context where adjacent tonal values agree (a "compatible" context), the deviation was relatively small. In a context where adjac...

Individual variability in the perception and production of coarticulated speech

Coarticulation, the influence of speech sounds on each other, is ubiquitous in speech. Such contextual effects in speech have been argued to be phonological in nature, given that coarticulation appears to be language-specific and planned. In this talk, I argue further for the phonological nature of coarticulation, using findings from recent behavioral and neurophysiological studies. In particul...

Tone Production in Whispered Mandarin

Acoustic analyses of normal voiced and whispered Mandarin Chinese reveal significant differences in duration and intensity among the four lexical tones, differences that are moreover similar across the two speech genres. In contrast to previous claims, however, these differences among the tones are found to shrink in whisper rather than being exaggerated to facilitate perception. Furthermore, i...
